Deco Apartments

This seemingly ratty block of apartments has somehow survived (for now) just footsteps away from the Historic Building Holocaust happening along the Fort Lauderdale Strip. (Note the capital 'S'.)

This here aging bit of concrete displays that Deco styling that flowed into what is called Streamline Moderne.

Observe the porthole windows. It's the nod to the nautical that's the tell.

Other Deco elements: the overhang above the door, and the flourish above that, which gives it just a touch of verticality.

I also fancy the corner windows. And that wonderous relic of Old Florida -- jalousie panes on the door.

Ireland's Inn

This just straight up pisses me off.

Ye ol Ireland's Inn has been a Lauderale landmark for decades. Beloved by the family of Sunshine, Lariza & Matt among many others.

Looks like shit now, of course.
A developer has grand plans for tearing it down. Not like Florida real estate is exactly gang busters right now.

But look past the run-down. That flip up of the concrete-covering providing shelter from the rain (with a little sass) at the main enterance. The shark's teeth balconies. That crazy-ass "I" still remaining among fallen letters.

A little love, I tell ya. All it needs. Not every hotel has to be super-luxury, pricey and gigantic. Or new. (Jus' sayin')
